This is probably not the first time you´ve heard this: content marketing is maturing, and in 2014 you´ll really need to up your game. Allowing your content to slip into the comfort of mediocrity means you´re bound to drop out of the race, according to an article I read at the weekend on Search Engine Watch. They believe that brands need to think outside the box, and offer some tips on how this can be achieved:
1. Introduce BuzzFeed-like headlines. Regardless of what you think of them, such headlines are like a magnet to users and can generate huge traffic. Think of really catchy headlines and forget everything you thought you knew about writing headlines. While 80% of users will read the entire headline, only 20% will read the article. So sites like ViralNova have a different strategy: squeeze as many “click triggers” into the headline as possible.
2. Focus on blog posts of 1,500+ words. The importance of in-depth content is rising and short blog posts just don´t cut it anymore, according to Search Engine Watch. Several studies have found that 1,500-word posts tend to generate more engagement than short posts because they have higher perceived value and provide a definitive guide on a topic, which is a great driver for shares.
3. Think about improving your outreach – even the most fantastic content could get lost in the flood of posts being published each minute. This means that you will have to send personal, non-obtrusive e-mails promoting your content. Of course, you should also use the tested method of posting links to your blog posts on social sites, as this will also help with outreach, the website noted.
It is clear how important content is – and it seems to only be increasing in importance in 2014. However, the problem remains – finding enough hours in the day to actually write this content.
