What´s the most important search engine ranking booster?

I read a recent study that looks at the most influential ranking factors in 2013 and beyond. Apparently, the importance of backlinks for SEO is increasing, while domain keywords are going in exactly the opposite direction.

The annual study, conducted by online marketing software provider Moz and online reputation management company Brand.com, identified some of the crucial ranking factors.

Brand.com noted that, compared to data from 2012, domain keywords are no longer as relevant as they were; it is actually the number of backlinks that is of critical importance. However, quantity should never come at the expense of quality; Google will still value content highly, Business 2 Community reported.

The study also shows that brands are privileged in comparison to personal domains because they are not as carefully scrutinised. Apparently, Google doesn´t mind a high volume of brand-named backlinks and does not punish them as it might do to other sites.

Social signals in general are also a powerful ranking factor, the study found. Stable Google ranking positions are highly correlated with Google +1s and Facebook shares. Brand.com commented that although the link between social signals and ranking isn´t new, in 2013 this correlation seems stronger than ever. Sensibly positioned URLs always generate likes, shares and re-tweets; when the top ranking results are examined, it´s obvious that they exhibit high level of social activity, the company pointed out.

One thing is for sure: content is key. Everyone knows by now that Google rewards fresh, relevant and frequently-updated content. Producing this sort of written content on a regular basis, however, is easier said than done. It can be time-consuming and harder to write than you might realise.
