How can you boost search engine ranking on Google?

Google is constantly adding new features to its local search services, which has made search engine optimisation for local businesses more difficult. I was looking through results from this year´s Moz survey, which sheds light on how small business owners can rearrange their digital marketing efforts to achieve success.

The survey, compiled by David Mihm from Moz, involved local search marketers who were asked to identify general, specific and negative SEO factors. Unsurprisingly, it revealed that page place signals are most influential on local search. They refer to relevant categories, keywords in business titles and proximity. By selecting the most appropriate categories, business owners can certainly improve their local search results, according to the participants of the poll.

External location signals, such as IYPs (Internet Yellow Pages), and name/address and phone number (NAP) consistency, as well as on-page signals (NAP presence, keywords in titles and domain authority) came second and third in the ranking, respectively.

The survey also lists the most important factors that make a website stand out from its competitors. The polled local search marketers highlighted the quality of structured citations and inbound links to domain, quantity of reviews by authority reviewers, consistency of structured citations and quantity of citations from industry-relevant domains.

The list of negative factors includes false business location, using too many keywords in the business name, the selection of an incorrect business category, and presence of multiple place pages with the same or similar business title or address.

According to Mihm, the top local search ranking factors have not changed much this year as compared to previous years.

One thing also remains the same when it comes to SEO boosting: content. Ensuring your website and social media are updated regularly with relevant and engaging content is of paramount importance. However, finding time to keep on top of this and conjure up interesting, thought-provoking posts on a regular basis can be harder than you think.
